The humble mouse, a peripheral essential to doing almost anything on a computer, but which is very rarely cited for being the marvel that it is. This year marks the 40 year anniversary for the mouse, with Dr Douglas Engelbart inventing it while working for the Stanford Research Institute in 1968. Unfortunately for him, he never received a penny for his invention, and the patent ran out in 1987, just before the computer revolution really hit the mainstream.

Raynaud's disease and Raynaud's phenomenon are rare disorders that affect blood vessels. These disorders are marked by brief episodes of vasospasm (narrowing of the blood vessels). Raynaud's is a condition in which the blood supply to the extremities, usually the fingers and toes, but sometimes also the ears and nose, is interrupted. This disorder is characterised by episodic attacks, called vasospastic attacks, that cause the blood vessels in the fingers and toes to constrict. Raynaud's syndrome can occur on its own, or it can be secondary to another condition such as scleroderma or lupus. Raynaud’s disease occurs more frequently in women than in men. Although it can occur at any age. It is estimated that 4 - 5% of the United States population is affected.

Causes

Doctors don't completely understand the cause of Raynaud's attacks, but blood vessels in the hands and feet appear to overreact to cold temperatures or stress.

When your body is exposed to cold temperatures, your extremities lose heat. Your body slows down blood supply to your fingers and toes to preserve your body's core temperature. Your body specifically reduces blood flow by narrowing the small arteries under the skin of your extremities. In people with Raynaud's, this normal response is exaggerated. Stress causes a similar reaction to cold in the body, and likewise the body's response may be exaggerated.

The symptoms include several cyclic color changes:

1. When exposed to cold temperatures, the blood supply to the fingertips, toes, nose, and earlobes of Raynaud's disease patients is reduced and the skin turns pale or white (called pallor) and becomes cold and numb. 2. When the oxygen supply is depleted, the skin colour turns blue (called cyanosis).

Treatment

There is no known way to prevent the development of Raynaud's disease. Further, there is no known cure for this condition. Therefore, avoidance of the trigger is the best supportive management available. Most cases of primary Raynaud's disease can be controlled with proper medical care and avoidance.

Many people are able to find relief by simply adjusting their lifestyles. Affected individuals need to stay warm, and keep their hands and feet well covered in cold weather. Layered clothing, scarves, heavy coats, heavy socks, and mittens under gloves are suggested because gloves alone allow heat to escape. It is also recommended that patients cover or close the space between their sleeves and mittens. Indoors, they should wear socks and comfortable shoes. Smokers should quit as nicotine will worsen the problem. Avoid the use of vibrating tools as well.

Non-medication treatment:

Biofeedback has been demonstrated to be safe and effective for some individuals. This is a technique designed to help a person gain control over involuntary body functions, such as skin temperature, heart rate, or blood pressure. Biofeedback training is necessary and several methods are available.

Occasionally I will take my lovebird Odie to work. I haven't taken him for probably six months, because he had just gotten too unruly. He would spend all of his time walking all over my hands while I tried to type.

I decided today, now that he had gotten a little older, to try it again. He did much better. He spent lots of time sitting down on my "mouse hand."

Which of your gadgets are you proud to own?
The audio system in my car makes me really proud. I have installed Illusion Audio’s eight-speaker set system that reportedly even Hollywood stars like Will Smith have in their cars. The fidelity and base of the speakers are the best I have ever heard, though there’s no space left in my car boot.

What was your first true gadget?
My Atari home computer that connected to my television was my first gadget. Thankfully I don’t have it any more while my Sony Vaio has become the rightful replacement for the same.

Have your gadgets ever came to your rescue?
My latest gadget, a universal remote for my home, has become the latest blessing as handling different remotes for my TV, AC, DVD, set top box was becoming a chore.

Have you ever fixed a broken gadget yourself?
I do like playing with gadget software, so have fixed many things on the software side of things, recovered data, fixed software glitches. However, I am not good on the hardware side.

Which gadget do you like to show off?
I think the show-off period is during the initial period of the gadget. Earlier it was the iPhone, now it is my new Logitech universal remote.

What’s the geekiest thing you’ve ever done?
There are quite a few geeky things I have done — most of them are simple things, though. For example, I had always been told that one cannot shut push email on a BlackBerry, so emails would disturb you in evenings too. I discovered how to switch off only the data services of BlackBerry.

What’s the longest time that you have spent mastering a gadget?
Nearly a week — I was one of the few guys who had programmed our VCR to record TV programmes based on time and date. A study has shown that 99.99 per cent of the VCRs in the world blink the time as 00:00.

What’s the perfect geeky gift for you?
I want to buy so many gadgets! I would like a flip camera that records and uploads directly to YouTube. I would also love a WiFi-enabled SD card that can transfer images through WiFi to PCs and, lately, I have my eye on this new mouse from Logitech which is an optical mouse remote pointer doubling up as a Wii remote too.
